Composting Old Bark and Wood Waste in Cold Weather Conditions

چکیده

The pulp and paper industry generates large quantities of bark wood waste (BWW), most which is disposed at dumps. There are dozens such dumpsites in Russia, some cause negative environmental impacts due to their proximity bodies water. Unlike fresh BWW, old BWW characterized by significant heterogeneity. Given that stored long-term dumps a water-heavy woody material subjected varying degrees microbiological decomposition, the acceptable method for its disposal composting. This text presents results studies focused on process field composting heaps with natural aeration during cold season region Perm, Russia. Composting was carried out two ways: (1) mineral fertilizers; (2) both fertilizers inoculum. Concurrent composting, laboratory under controlled conditions. At end 60-day ambient temperatures 5 −14 °C, there were decreases values compost mixture: loss ignition (LOI) fell 22%, chemical oxygen demand (COD) 98%, respiratory activity (AT4) 32%. In conditions an temperature 30–35 LOI decreased 24%, COD AT4 39%. introduction inoculum into mixture did not intensify biochemical destruction neither nor

A kinetic analysis of solid waste composting at optimal conditions.

This discussion explores the possibility of having a measure of the biodegradable organic carbon content in solid wastes. Currently, indirect measures for determining the concentration of biodegradable organic matter are being used and most of them are based on respiration indices (oxygen consumption or carbon dioxide production) or chemical parameters (volatile solids or total organic carbon)....

Trends in Yard Waste Composting

HE TREND toward composting reached its peak in Switzerland in 1975 when approximately 10 percent-or over 200,000 tons-of garbage were composted. However, as garbage production per capita and per year increased ;gin 1960 to 430 kg in 1987, cheminination also accelerated. This led to concern about excessive pollutants in compost and their impact on human health and the environment. Switzerland's...

Composting Solid Waste in Military Contingency Operations

More than 1,000 boxes of sewage sludge are stockpiled at this base camp. It was composted during the beginning of a pilot study in 2004. Armies around the globe have always had to deal with the problem of solid waste. Today, a large percentage of solid waste is packaging materials (cardboard, paper, and plastic), in addition to waste food and sewage sludge. While much of the solid waste generat...
